It is the condition in which arthritic changes occur in the cervical vertebraes due to wear and tear of joints with ageing .It is also called as cervical osteoarthritis.It can cause pain in neck and arm .It may cause numbness in hand if nerve gets compressed due to arthritic changes.So the line of treatment stays to treat symptoms and help patient to prevent from further arthritic changes .

 

Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosisis a very common condition now a days. It is basically degeneration of neck bones (which are called vertebrae) as well as discs(cushion like structures in between two bones)
Trouble in the neck troubles everybody intodays work related activities, stress, posture etc. People usually say they are suffering from “cervical” bt cervical is neck itself. So in this way everybody has cervical. So it is adviced to all the patients to differentiate between myofacial pain in the neck or true cervical spondylosis and a doctor or physiotherapist can tell the difference.
Most of the cases come with neck pain have myofacial pain in which people suffer from pain due to stiffness or trigger points in different areas of neck muscles.

 

EXERCISES FOR NECK PAIN

 

ISOMETRICS

Isometrics are static contraction of muscles without any movement of neck.this is for strengthening of muscles.
Static Flexion – Put both hands on your forehead and gently push against their resistance. Tighten the neck muscles and try your best not to let your head move forward. Hold this position for around 8 seconds. Rest your neck, then repeat.
Static Extension – Place both hands against the lower back of your head. Apply slight forward pressure resist the movement as you push your head back into your hands. Hold the position for 5 seconds. Rest for 3 seconds then repeat.
Isometric Lateral Flexion – Place your right hand on the right side of your head, just above the right ear. Tighten your neck muscles and resist thepressure tomove your head sideways. Hold the position for 5 seconds. Rest for 3 seconds then repeat. Do the same procedure to your left side.
 

STRETCHING NECK MUSCLES

Neck Extensor Stretch:- This stretch is for the long extensor muscles and the suboccipital muscles.
  1. 1. Sit with your chest up and looking straight ahead.
  2. 2. Gently push your chin back while looking straight ahead(so that you have a double chin)
  3. 3. Keep your head upright, don't look up or down. Keep eyes facing forward.
  4. 4. While holding your chin back with one hand, use your other hand to reach over the top of your head.
  5. 5. Stabilize your chin back as you gently pull the top of your head forward.

Upper Fibres of Trapezius Stretch:- The upper fibres of trapezius on both sides will elevate the shoulders. Because these fibres attach to the spinous processes of the vertebra and base of the skull, the head must be rotated toward the side being stretched prior to commencing with the stretch.
  1. 1. Sit with your chest up and hold onto the chair with one hand.
  2. 2. Turn your head toward the hand that is holding onto the chair.
  3. 3. Use your free hand to pull your head straight toward the opposite side
  4. 4. To feel more stretch, lean your body slightly away from the hand that is holding onto the chair to depress your shoulder further.
  5. Scalene Muscles:- When acting unilaterally these muscle will sideflex the neck to the same side and elevate the ribs. These muscles are used to assist in breathing when breathing is difficult.
    1. 1. Sit with your chest up forward on the edge of a chair.
    2. 2. Hold the leg or seat of the chair tightly with one hand to keep the ribs down.
    3. 3. Sideflex your head to the opposite side without flexing your head forward.
    4. 4. You may find you get more of a stretch if you rotate your head slightly toward the hand that is holding onto the chair and slightly extend your neck as you sideflex

After sitting for long hours on computer, neck starts aching.during this one can do some easy exercises to relieve from pain.these are:-

  1. 1. Neck Retraction
  2. 2. Side Flexion
  3. 3. Neck Rotation
  4. 4. Shoulder Blade Pull



In Ayurveda,cervicalspondylosis is known as GREEVA STAMBHA.various medicines in Ayurveda are used.these are:-

    1. MahaYogarajaGuggulu 500 mg BD orally with water after meal.
  1. 2. Panchaguna tail for local use
  2. 3. Nadisweda (local steam with DashmoolaKwatha).

  4. 4. Shirodhara:- Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow).

  5. 5. Lepanam:- This is a process by which medicated herbal paste is applied on the affected part of the body.
